Creek Street: The Gateway to the Salmon Capital of the World

If you’re visiting Ketchikan for the world-class fishing, your journey into our history begins at Creek Street. While it’s now a charming boardwalk of colorful boutiques, this historic landmark was built on the very foundation that earned Ketchikan its title: The Salmon Capital of the World.

For those joining us for a private fishing charter, understanding the “Creek” is the best way to appreciate the waters we fish today.

Built for the Run

Creek Street exists because of the fish. Long before the boardwalk was built in the early 1900s, the Tlingit people established summer fish camps here to harvest the massive salmon runs. The buildings are perched on wooden stilts over the water because the rocky cliffs made land-building nearly impossible—but more importantly, it kept the town centered exactly where the action was.

The Salmon Highway

From late June through September, Creek Street offers a front-row seat to one of nature’s greatest spectacles. Thousands of salmon—including King, Coho, Pink, and Chum—crowd the shallow waters of the creek to spawn.

The Fish Ladder: At the end of the boardwalk, you can watch these powerful fish leap up the falls. It’s a humble reminder of the strength of the species we target on our Salmon Charters.

A Legacy of Industry

In the early 20th century, Creek Street was the heartbeat of a booming industry. By the 1930s, Ketchikan was home to 13 canneries packing over 1.5 million cases of salmon a year. While the “Red Light District” history often gets the spotlight (check out Dolly’s House for the full story), it was the hardworking fishermen who fueled the town’s economy.

From the Boardwalk to the Boat

Walking Creek Street gives you a sense of the scale of Alaska’s marine life, but nothing compares to being in the middle of it. Our charters depart from Clover Pass Resort, located just a short trip from downtown. We take the legacy of Creek Street into the modern era, using professional gear and local expertise to put you on the fish.
